The benefits of Oxford / AstraZeneca’s vaccine still outweigh the risks for most people, according to the UK Medicines Watchdog.

A review by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) safety committee came to that on Wednesday Conclusion that « unusual blood clots with low platelets should be listed as very rare side effects » of the Oxford / AstraZeneca [AZ] vaccine.

Due to the very low number of blood clots in younger people, people under 30 years of age are offered Pfizer or Moderna instead .

In the UK, the Medicines and Health Products Regulator (MHRA) stated that the vaccine still offers tremendous benefits in preventing Covid-19 and serious diseases.

Emer Cooke, EMA Executive Director, said, « This vaccine has been shown to be highly effective in preventing serious illness and hospitalization, and it saves Leb en. Vaccination is extremely important in the fight against Covid-19 and we need to use the vaccines « to protect ourselves from the devastating effects. »

An expert panel review of the AZ vaccine by the Medicines Agency found the combination of blood clots and low platelets to be « very rare. » The EMA said a plausible explanation was « an immune response to the. » Vaccine « that causes a condition similar to that sometimes seen in heparin-treated patients.

Heparin is used to treat and prevent blood clots caused by certain medical conditions or medical procedures.

Most cases of reported blood clots occurred in women under the age of 60, regulators said.

As of March 31, the MHRA had received 79 reports of low platelet count blood clots, all in people who had received their first dose of vaccine.

Of those 79, a total of 19 people died, although not in every case it was established what the cause was. The 79 cases occurred in 51 women and 28 men between the ages of 18 and 79 years.

Of the 19 deceased, three were younger than 30 years old, the MHRA said. Some of the 14 cases were cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), a type of blood clot that prevents blood from draining from the brain. The other five cases were thrombosis.

England’s deputy chief physician, Prof. Jonathan Van-Tam, said in a press conference on Wednesday that it was still very important that the adults requesting a second dose to ask Request to be brought forward.

« Vaccines are still the way out for the UK, they are still the way we can get our lives back to normal and our economy reopened in no time, » he added.

Professor Wei Shen, chairman of the Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee (JCVI), described the vaccination program as « fair and transparent ».

He said the « risk-benefit balance » was important and emphasized that there was general benefit for young people to be vaccinated.

Prof. Shen added, « When we have an alternative vaccine, we generally feel it is preferable to age the youngest people who have no other health problems Offering an active vaccine instead of the AZ vaccine really just for safety reasons rather than any particular concern about the risk of the vaccine itself. «

He said 31- and 32-year-olds should make their own decisions about what to use with Vaccination, however, stressed that the balance is still in favor of vaccination.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he will carefully follow the JCVI’s advice on AZ vaccine but does not think he is easing the schedule The lockdown needs to change.

During a visit to Cornwall, he told the broadcasters, « I think the bottom line is to listen to what the scientists and the doctors, the medical experts, have to say.

« The MHRA meets, the JCVI meets, they will determine the position and we will continue with the introduction of the vaccine and of course we will very carefully follow what they have to say.

» I don’t think anything I’ve seen leads me to believe that we need to change the map or deviate from the map in any way. «

In the UK, more than 20 million cans of the AstraZeneca have now been sold. Vaccine, saving an estimated 6,000 lives.
