American teenager Amanda Anisimova was competing at the Volvo Car Open 2021 in Charleston. After winning her opening round match against Magda Linette, the 19-year-old faltered in the next match. As a result, her journey at the event came to an end against fellow American player Shelby Rogers.
After the match, Amanda Anisimova reflected on the loss she suffered. She felt extremely gutted and posted a tweet that read, “Shi*t happens… but this often? unbelievable.” Later, she deleted the tweet. However, one could sense the disappointment of the youngster.
In the match, Amanda cruised in the first set and sealed it 6-1 without much difficulty. At that point in time, it seemed as if the teenager would wrap up the match in a jiffy. However, her opponent had other ideas and clawed back into the match, taking the next set 7-5.
As the match headed into the deciding set, the momentum shifted towards Shelby. Nonetheless, it was a seesaw battle as both players failed to hold serve with efficiency. In the final set, Anisimova broke her opponent four times, whereas Shelby returned the favor and broke Amanda five times.
After 2 hours and 9 minutes, the match came to an end and Rogers emerged victoriously. It was their first meeting and went in favor of the 28-year-old South Carolina resident.
Speaking of Amanda’s current season, she was forced to miss the Australian Open. She was in quarantine and had to complete the two-week duration. Due to that, she was stuck in Abu Dhabi, which led to her absence from the season’s first Grand Slam event.
Last week, she competed in Miami at the season’s first WTA 1000 event. During the event, she beat 2017 US Open champion, Sloane Stephens, in her opening round match. However, she lost to eventual finalist Bianca Andreescu in the following match.
The season has now proceeded into the clay-court events; it is a surface that is preferred by Amanda. It will be interesting to see how she performs in the coming tournaments.
