Cauvery River: The Karnataka state government is to hold an all-party meeting on future measures to safeguard the interests of Karnataka in connection with the sharing of Cauvery water between the states. The announcement comes as the Tamil Nadu government is taking steps to properly utilize the surplus water received from the Cauvery River.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Central and Major Irrigation Ramesh Jharkiholi on Sunday. The announcement came after extensive consultations with senior officials, technical advisers and legal team of the Water Resources Department, which is overseeing issues related to water issues in Karnataka.
The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the Cauvery-Vellaru-Vaigai-Gundaru river connection project. The announcement comes as plans are afoot to distribute the surplus water from the Cauvery to southern areas. We will seek the permission of Chief Minister Eduyurappa to consult on this matter before the Assembly convenes. Zarkiholy said lawmakers would also attend, along with the opposition leader and some leaders. Tamil Nadu has taken a unilateral decision in this matter. This will affect the welfare of Karnataka. He also said that Karnataka has a share of the surplus water above 177.25 TMCD which is the share of Tamil Nadu.
