Gonzaga and his national championship goals were pushed back little in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA tournament.

The top overall seed took advantage of hot 3-point shooting and suffocating defense to gain a 20-point lead at halftime Norfolk State to open at 16th seed, and the Bulldogs scored a 98-55 win at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday.

The 43-point win marked the biggest profit margin in the first two days of the tournament 2021, beating Houston’s 31-point win over Cleveland State on Friday.

Gonzaga (27-0) has now won 12 consecutive NCAA tournament games in the opening round and will beat Oklahoma (16-10) in on Monday go up the 32nd round. The Sooners with the eighth seed separated from the Missouri with the ninth seed on Saturday.

Corey Kispert scored 23 points in the 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, while Anton Watson scored the Bulldogs with 17 points 7 out of 7 off the field sparked off the bench and scored seven rebounds. Joel Ayayi had 15 points and nine rebounds at clearance, Drew Timme had 10 points, six points and five assists, and Julian Strawther came down the bench to score three 3-point points and finish on nine points.

As a team, Gonzaga finished 34 of 61 (55.7%) from the field and 14 of 27 (51.9%) from a distance.

The Bulldogs reached the 90-point mark for the 15th time in 27 games , shot 50% off the field for the 12th time in a row and had a rebound advantage of 45-22.

Gonzaga built his first 30-point lead with 14:10 in the game and led 9:25 with 40 points Head Start. The Bulldogs led twice by 49 points at 5:51 and 5:50.

Kispert, Timme, Ayayi, Watson and newcomer Jalen Suggs sat on Gonzaga’s bench seven minutes before the start of the game, and the Bulldogs finished the game with one Lineup that included Will Graves and Matthew Lang walk-ons.

Kispert was fourth on GU’s 3-point list ahead of Matt Santangelo. Kispert’s six 3s were a shy one from Stephen Gray’s program record in an NCAA tournament game against Davidson. Only a few: « Corey is clearly an all-timer with us. »

The game starts to get chippy when Joel Ayayi was poked in the gut for a 3-pointer. The referees went to the monitors to look for an obvious foul but didn’t call any.

Later, Jalen Suggs drove down the alley, dragging his arm as he tried to lie down. That game has also been reviewed and an obvious foul has been called.

3:37 – Gonzaga 40, NSU 21: Corey Kispert made four 3-pointers and the Zags are in complete control.

Kispert has 12 points to GU to to lead. The Bulldogs shoot 60% and have a rebound of 17-8.

Gonzaga 43, NSU 23: Corey Kispert has 15 points on five 3-pointers and the No. 1 Zags lead the Spartans at halftime by 20 points on.

32.1% of the Spartans shoot and have made 3 out of 10 from a distance. Devante Carter has five points for NSU, but is only 2 of 7 off the field.

Joel Ayayi scored seven points for Gonzaga in 3-of-6. Center Drew Timme has six points from just three attempts to shoot.

Freshman guard Jalen Suggs fought for the Zags in his first NCAA tournament game. He has two points on 0-of-3 and three turnovers with two assists. His points came at the free-throw line.

15:29 – Gonzaga 52, NSU 27: Corey Kispert has 18 points, Anton Watson has 12 and the Zags lead by 25 points in the first media timeout of the half.

Watson didn’t miss a shot – 6 out of 6 – and has 6 rebounds. The second striker also has two steals and two assists.

10:43 – Gonzaga 69, NSU 30: A 21: 3 run in the last six minutes increased the Zags against the Spartans by 39.

The run was highlighted by an off-the-backboard alley after Jalen Suggs. Joel Ayayi put the ball away on the defensive and, after getting it back from Corey Kispert during the break, put the ball off the glass so that Suggs could throw it.
