Ahmedabad: Counting is going on for the six municipal corporations of Gujarat. All municipal corporations are witnessing BJP’s rise in early trends. BJP has led in decisive 80 seats in Ahmedabad Corporation. Congress has an edge over 15 seats, while AIMIM has an edge over 4 seats. If we talk about Surat Municipal Corporation, then BJP has an edge over 40 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party has an edge over 18 places. But the Congress is ahead in just 10 seats. Polling was held from 7 am to 6 pm on Sunday for a total of 144 wards of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar municipal corporations. The State Election Commission said that 46.1 percent voters cast their votes.

According to the final figures released by the commission, Ahmedabad recorded the lowest turnout of 42.5 per cent and Jamnagar the highest at 53.4 per cent, followed by 50.7 per cent in Rajkot, 49.5 per cent in Bhavnagar, 47.8 per cent in Vadodara and 47.1 per cent in Surat. Out of the total 1.14 crore registered voters of the state, 52.83 lakh people voted on Sunday.

The Aam Aadmi Party has claimed that it will be an effective alternative to the BJP and the Congress, while Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is contesting the local body elections for the first time. Around 32,000 policemen were deployed to vote in 575 seats, each ward having four councilors.

Apart from this, nine candidates were also in the fray for the two by-elections in Junagadh Municipal Corporation. Those contesting elections include 577 from BJP, 566 from Congress, 470 from AAP, 91 from NCP, 353 from other parties and 228 independents. According to the State Election Commission, there are a total of 1.14 crore voters, including 60.60 lakh men and 54.06 lakh women.
