Today, January 22, on the day of the proclamation in 1919 of the Act of Unification (Zluka) of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic, the Day of Unity of Ukraine is celebrated.
The holiday was officially established in 1999 by the decree of Leonid Kuchma. January 22 is also the date of other memorable events in Ukrainian history. In 1918, on this day, the independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was declared. A year later, on the same day, the UNR and ZUNR were united. In 1990 this holiday was celebrated with the « Living Chain » action – millions of people from Kiev to Lvov joined hands, marking the Day of Unity.
