At least three people have died in a mysterious blast that shook Karnataka’s Shivamogga town on Thursday night. The blast was heard across Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s home district at around 10.15 pm. Police have confirmed it was some explosion and that at least three people have been killed.
While eyewitnesses said they felt tremors at the same time as the explosion, the police department has ruled out the possibility of an earthquake.
The tremors were felt in Honasodu village in Shivamogga district, also known as Shivamogga district and parts of Chikkamagaluru district. Only minor property damage reported as of now, the police said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Anuradha told India Today, « It was an explosion about 5-6 kms from the city of Shivamogga moga. Deaths are being reported. »
Pratap Reddy, Additional Director General of Police confirmed that it was an explosion in the limits of Shivamogga rural police station and that they, from the outskirts of the core area of the explosion, can see a damaged truck. He added that it is not clear whether the truck had some explosives or it was caught in an explosion.
Police, from a distance, have spotted three bodies at the explosion site. Police have not entered the core area as they don’t know if there are more explosives at the spot.
« It is an explosion in the limits of Shivamogga rural police station. We do not know if the truck had the explosives or next to the truck. There are deaths. Police have not entered the core area as they do not know if there are more explosives at the spot, » he said.
Deputy Commissioner Shivakumar said the police is on high alert and there is nothing to panic. He added that they don’t know if there’s « live dynamite ».
« It’s dark, we need a bit of light. We have cordoned off the area, » he added.
There are no reports of a recent earthquake in Karnataka on the National Center for Seismology (NCS) website or on the USGS site another platform that tracks tremors across the globe.
District disaster management official Jagadish told India Today over the phone, « Our instruments did not pick any earthquake data. The IMD [Indian Meteorological Department] also checked, nothing with them either. »
« It could be a shallow earthquake, less than 1 on the Richter scale but the images of glass breaking would not have happened, » Jagadish added.
The noise was so loud that glasses in many houses were shattered. Several locals took to social media to express their concerns after the incident.

A few months ago, a similar mystery had shrouded Karnataka capital Bengaluru when a loud noise shook the city. Later it was discovered that the noise was produced when an Indian Air Force fighter jet broke the sonic boom barrier during the test fight.
The incident took place in May and had generated a lot of speculations and meme fest before the mystery was resolved by the IAF.
