Pongal, the national festival of the Tamils, is celebrated for 3 days. On the second day, a cow festival is held to thank Avinash for his support to the plowing industry.
Pongalittu is celebrated by thanking the dairy cows for their lifelong support to the farmer and for contributing to the reduction of workload.
In turn, the horns of the cows are painted in many colors and look good. During this cow festival, the cows are bathed, bathed and dressed for the evening. Netty garlands are sold for these cattle to wear.
Despite the variety of plastic and non-perishable garlands, there are many farmers who look for the beauty of the cows by looking for and buying garlands for the cows during the traditionally celebrated Cow Pongal.
These Netti garlands are being made by about 25 families in Thipprajapuram near Kumbakonam. The workers involved in the production of Neti Malai said:
We have been making Netti Malai for many generations in Thipprajapuram. We, who are working as agricultural laborers, will start this work after the end of Diwali.
Nettles are not likely to grow due to lack of water in lakes, ponds and canals. Then, it will be difficult to get netizens. Similarly, in some ponds where water is stagnant, emphasis will be placed on fish farming, which will prevent nettles from growing. This causes great difficulty in obtaining nettles.
However, we will find and cut the growing nettles in water bodies such as lakes, ponds and canals and dry them in the sun.
The garlands are bought and dried in the Adirampattinam and Mallipattinam areas. After drying the netti with a knife, soak it in multi-colored dye powder and cut it into small pieces. Following this, we will dry the netti with the help of low fiber.
During the Pongal festival, we take it to Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Kudavasal, Valangaiman and Nachiyarko and sell it. Some merchants come straight to us and buy. A couple of these garlands cost Rs. 10 to Rs. Selling up to 50.
We have been working with the family for 3 months for this. We celebrate Pongal without borrowing from anyone with the proceeds.
In this modern age, plastic, paper flower and perennial garlands are coming, but farmers still give importance to netti garlands. Farmers prefer this because the hummingbird is cool and loose when worn around the neck of the cow.
But in plastic, paper flower garlands the garlands are fastened with thin wire, which is sometimes likely to tighten around the cow’s neck. This is why farmers buy netti garlands and wear them for livestock.
Workers in the industry say the industry will not be weakened if the traditional industry is kept afloat and we are given low interest loans.
