Legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan believes that only Ravichandran Ashwin can reach 700-800 wickets in the current generation of spinners and Australia’s Nathan Lyon is not capable of reaching it.
Muralitharan has the highest number of 800 wickets in Test cricket, while Shane Warne (708) is second and Anil Kumble (619) is third.
Muralitharan said in Michael Vaughan’s column for London’s Telegraph newspaper, « Ashwin has a chance because he is a great bowler. Apart from him, no other bowler can reach 800. Nathan Lyon does not have that ability. He is close to 400 wickets but will have to play a lot of matches to get there. »
Ashwin has taken 377 wickets in 74 Tests while Leon has taken 396 wickets in 99 Tests.
Muralitharan said, « Everything changed from T20 and ODI cricket. When I used to play, the batsmen were rich in technique and the wickets were flat. Now the matches are over in three days. In my time, the bowlers had to put in extra effort to bring results and to show the splendor of the spin. ”He said,“ Nowadays, while holding the line and length, we get five wickets because batsmen do not last long while playing aggressive. »
Muralitharan played cricket during the time of Warne, Kumble, Sakleen Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed and later Harbhajan Singh. He said, « At that time spinners had to work very hard for the wicket. This is the reason why others used to work on finding balls. Now with the arrival of T20 there is a change in diversity. »
Muralitharan played only one series against India in 2008 after the arrival of DRS and believes that using this technique at that time would have given him more wickets.
He said, « I would say that if DRS were there, I would have got more wickets because then the batsmen would not be able to use the pad so easily. » They used to get the benefit of doubt.
