Polish biathlete Monika Hojnisch won the 15 km individual race at the European Championships. The championship started on Wednesday in the Polish city of Duszniki-Zdroj.
Hojnisch covered the distance in 45 minutes 17.1 seconds, with one penalty on the firing line. The silver medal was won by Ukrainian Anastasia Merkushina. With clean shooting, she lost 2.9 seconds to the winner.
The third was Russian Larisa Kuklina. She hit 19 out of 20 targets, 15.5 seconds behind Hoynisch. The fourth place was taken by another representative of the Russian national team, Anastasia Shevchenko, who did not make a single mistake. Her lag behind the winner was 33.5 seconds.
Four more Russian biathletes took part in the individual race. Polina Shevnina finished 17th (two penalties; two minutes 31.2 seconds behind), Natalya Gerbulova – 22nd (three penalties; 3.49.2), Ekaterina Noskova – 27th (three penalties; 4.02.5), Valeria Vasnetsov – 56th (seven penalties; 6.16.6).
The European Biathlon Championships in Duszniki Zdrój will last until January 31. In total, medals will be awarded in eight disciplines – individual races, sprint and pursuit races for men and women, as well as single mixed and mixed relay.
The European Championship, which has an open status, has been held annually since 1994. Biathletes from all over the world can take part in it. Traditionally, the leaders of their national teams miss the European Championship.
Last year the tournament was held at the Belarusian Republican Center for Olympic Training in Winter Sports « Raubichi ». In the team event, the victory was won by the national team of Belarus, which won three gold and one bronze.
Russian biathletes won two gold and two silver medals at the 2020 European Championships. Evgenia Pavlova won the super sprint, Matvey Eliseev won the sprint. In addition, Kristina Reztsova became the second in the pursuit, and together with Victoria Slivko, Eduard Latypov and Karim Khalili won silver in the mixed relay.
