The joking about the latest new model from KTM is over. The Austrian manufacturer presents its new adventure machine in liter size. And that machine is the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. The handling of the bike has been improved by several changes. First, an overhaul of the chassis should improve the weight distribution and agility of driving. In the new model, the steering head of the bike moves back 15 mm, while the front part of the motor has been moved.

A longer swing arm with an open grille also contributes to additional stability when accelerating. And alluding to day-to-day ease of use, a new subframe allows a lower seat height without compromising durability or practicality.

To provide additional comfort and ease of use, the bike has a new two-stage seat that is 20 mm (0.867 inch) is adjustable. The handlebars of the bike, a brand new TFT color display and the windshield are now adjustable. The newly developed windshield with wind tunnel can now be moved vertically by 55 mm. Overall, KTM says the 2021 1290 Super Adventure S features less mass centralization and refined weight and balance.

Although last year’s 1290 Super Adventure motorcycles already have riding modes such as rain, street, sport, off-road and optional Rally, the 2021 1290 Super Adventure S features a new generation of electronics for a less intrusive level of traction control.

For the year 2021, the lean angle dependent motorcycle traction control of the bike has two different controls. One tracks the wheel slip while the other calculates the pitch angle. They both use their own data and strategies.

Cornering ABS and off-road ABS systems come from a new stability control for motorcycles from Bosch, while the motor slip control is optional.

You can see the antenna for the new adaptive cruise control (ACC) from Bosch at the bottom of the headlight cluster.

However, the star of the new technology on the bike is the standard adaptive cruise control system. The system is a joint development by KTM and Bosch. With the help of radar, the system automatically adjusts the safety distance to the traffic ahead in five steps that can be set using the machine’s front handlebar switches.

The bike has a brand new TFT display. A connection is established to a new “connectivity unit” for seamless pairing of smartphones. According to KTM, the larger dashboard view of the display has “… faster and more practical menu systems as well as clear aesthetic infographics to clearly show different areas of the bike.” The dashboard is now on a newly designed storage compartment with a USB charging socket.

Communication with the display is now easier thanks to brand new switches on both sides of the handlebar. The setup is designed to provide a more seamless experience. A revised set of quick selection and favorite buttons allows changes to be made on the fly, « … while the driver is concentrating on the streets ahead ».

The 2021 Super Adventure S complies with the Euro5 standard and still delivers 160 hp and 102 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the thinner motor housing and a new oil circuit, the motor is 1.6 kg lighter. The engine now breathes more easily with an improved exhaust. The shift friendliness is improved by a revised Pankl shift mechanism, which improves the optional quickshifter action.

Inside the engine are new pistons for improved reliability, while the whole package stays cooler thanks to a new « water / oil » system. Two new radiators, which, together with the redesigned body of the bike, direct the warm air away from the rider’s legs, provide more cooling.

For the year 2021 the 1290 Super Adventure S will receive a new generation of WP Apex Semi-Active Technology (SAT) springs. With its new valve, the SAT offers increased damping. A Suspension Pro package offers additional cushioning for the fork and damper, automatic preload adjustment and an on / off anti-immersion setting.
