Two Rajya Sabha seats were vacated from Gujarat following the deaths of Ahmed Patel and a BJP member. In this, the BJP won the seat which Ahmed Patel had been holding in the Rajya Sabha from 1993 till his death without any contestants.

Ahmedabad: The BJP has won two Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat. One of the seats belonged to the late Congress leader Ahmed Patel. BJP candidates Dinesh Chand Anawadia and Rambhai Mokaria won unopposed. Earlier, the Gujarat Congress leadership had not fielded a candidate for the vacant seats.

Two Rajya Sabha seats were vacated from Gujarat following the deaths of Ahmed Patel and a BJP member. In this, the BJP won the seat which Ahmed Patel had been holding in the Rajya Sabha from 1993 till his death without any contestants. Ahmed Patel, a senior Congress leader, died on November 25 last year.

BJP leader Abhay Bhardwaj has died in the by-elections. He died on December 1 last year. He was also a Kovid victim. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2019. Returning officer Sibi Pandya announced the victory of the two BJP leaders in the evening.

The Congress currently has 65 MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly. With this, the Congress did not field a candidate who was convinced that it would not be able to win a seat from the 111 – member BJP in the 182 – member assembly.
