Ebene Magazine - Weather gods smile on Potch as second-leg of One Day Cup resumes en

The first leg of 2020/21 One Day Cup hasn’t gone off to a perfect start despite two belter opening games at Senwes Park.

But that was it. Only two games were completed, while the remaining four Pool A games were abandoned without a ball being bowled in Potchefstroom.

The Dolphins and Knights progressed to semi-finals, while the Titans crashed out by a single point separating them from the Bloemfontein-franchise.

The second part of the One-Day Cup gets underway on Friday with the Lions, Cape Cobras and Warriors competing in a bio-secure environment.

Cape Cobras coach Ashwell Prince is optimistic and hasn’t been thinking too much on the weather.

« I’m not someone who watches the forecast four days out, we can only assess conditions leading up to Friday’s game. If there’s a lot of rain, we expect moisture and if there’s sun, we expect it to be dried out and slower. »

According to the South African Weather Service, it’s going to be sunny all weekend in Potchefstroom with temperatures in the 30s – although there is some thunderstorms expected on Friday.

With play possible all weekend, Lions captain Aaron Phangiso is hoping his side can get points on the board as they take on the Cobras on Friday.

« Yeah, it’s a bit disappointing to not a lot of cricket being played because of the weather. At the moment, the weather is looking good so hopefully, it can hold up for the next couple of games, » said Phangiso.

« Every game is important, whether or not we play our first or second game. We’ve got two good teams with us so it’ll be important for guys to get on the park although it’s been a while.

« It’s important for the guys to get going and points, we’ve been preparing well. It’s very important that we hit the ground running and put a good performance from Day 1. »

For the Cobras, Lions and Warriors, it’ll be their first game in over a month after the sixth round of the 4-Day Franchise Series was postponed.

Phangiso admits that although their side has some advantage with Senwes Park is the Lions’ second home ground, he warns that his side will need to adjust to the « different » wickets.

« We know the conditions well but with when we watched the last few games that was played, it was a completely different wicket so we’re going to have to adjust, » said Phangiso, who has played 21 ODIs and 16 T20Is for the Proteas.

« We have a number of guys that can deliver in those kinds of conditions, it’s going to be different to what we’re used to… It’s just a matter of adjusting and playing well.

« What I’d like to see the team improve on is to be ruthless. We were put in situations last season when didn’t take the bonus-point and went for the safer route, » he continued.

« Especially when it comes to these conditions like the weather, the last group didn’t get as much cricket as possible so if we can go after those bonus points – it’ll be a plus for us. »

The Cobras have brought plenty of new faces to Potchefstroom and Prince is looking forward to giving them an opportunity.

« We’ve put a squad of new guys with great ambitions, who are trying to make their mark in South African cricket, » said Prince.

« I think we got a good combination, I’m confident and looking forward to the guys expressing themselves. »

His side play back-to-back matches after the opener when they play the Lions on Sunday and then the Cobras on Wednesday.

« It’s been a long break since we last played, not ideal, but the circumstances dictated it. It’s amongst the challenges the season has been throwing us in 2020/21.

« I must say that it has felt like another pre-season, but we’re excited to now be playing.

« It’s a different format now, it’s a reduced calendar and that means we’re playing more tournament-style cricket and not competition-style cricket. So you’ve got to hit the ground running and that’s what we’ll be aiming to do, » said Peterson.

« I think we’re in the tougher group, all the teams in this group in terms of skills match up are tightly matched. I think it could come down to net run-rate in the end and you’re going to have to need a bit a little bit of luck considering you only have four games. »
