Suffolk business leaders say the government’s post-lockdown roadmap is only « part of the solution » for post-pandemic economic recovery.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday announced the government’s plan to lift the restrictions for coronavirus to loosen up and get the economy going again. The companies will reopen in four steps between March and June.

In response to the plan, Paul Simon, Director of Policy and Communications at the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Suffolk Chamber of Commerce broadly understands the cautious step-by-step approach The government to reopen our society and economy, as no one wants a full return lock again.

“We also praise the openness of the government in setting the four conditions that must be met before any step can be continued.

“This plan is only part of the solution. Next week’s budget is critical to determining the future viability of thousands of local businesses, many of which have declined sharply in recent months.

“To make a living, we advocate expanding systems for Maintaining the job and supporting self-employment, at least until the economy can fully reopen and at least until the end of July 2021, as well as support for directors of limited liability companies for an expansion of income protection. «

Andrew Mower, Development Director for East of England at the Federation of Small Businesses, said, » The roadmap gives small businesses in East Anglia the much-needed clarity.

« Most importantly, it is important that the plan be in advance A fourth wave of Covid and an associated lockdown, the imposition of which would be devastating for companies already fearful of closure this year.

« Small businesses are aware that the recovery from an accelerated vaccination program , access to improved testing infrastructure for businesses of all sizes, safe return from schools, and the right security measures in businesses.

« Basically, implementation and deadlines for business support measures must reflect this roadmap to avoid that new companies are pressured before they have a chance to reach their potential. «

Chris Starkie, New Anglia LEP General Manager said: « We applaud the government’s approach to reopening. Companies want security and the roadmap helps.

« If you keep track of the data and are very clear about the four conditions that must be met at each stage, hopefully companies can plan ahead.

« There will be many difficult months to come, however, so it is important that the vacation program and targeted financial aid continue to be available to those businesses that remain closed or operate under restrictions. »
