After lengthy discussions with several brands, the New Zealand police have confirmed that the Czech car maker Skoda will be its new main vehicle supplier after getting out of Holden.
The local police will use the Skoda Superb and directly replace the Holden ZB Commodore. In contrast to the Commodore, which was used locally as a liftback
and a station wagon, local superb police cars will only come in the form of wagons. The introduction of the new patrol cars will begin next April.
NZ Autocar believes Kia and Toyota were also considered for the position. A new Camry disguised as the current police car
was recently discovered on the back of a flatbed truck, and there have also been rumors that an equipped Stinger GT is currently being evaluated.
« With currently more than 2000 primary emergency vehicles, the selection of a new supplier offers an important opportunity to reduce CO2 emissions
and make our fleet good value for money, ”says New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster.
“The frontline staff said [the Skodas] handled it well and felt safe and secure driving the vehicle. They liked the big doors with a large opening area,
Easy to read instruments, front and rear visibility and the spaciousness of the rear passenger compartment. ”
Skoda may not be the most popular brand in New Zealand, but it is a popular brand for police and emergency services in Europe, including in
Austria, France and Great Britain. Commissioner Coster said that in addition to the proven track record, reducing emissions was another key motivator
“These new vehicles will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our fleet. Compared to our current fleet, the CO2 emissions are per kilometer
could be reduced by up to 38. 6 percent per vehicle, depending on what is being replaced, ”he says.
“While incredibly promising, electric and hybrid technology are not yet a viable option for our patrol cars. However, we are determined to reduce
our CO2 emissions and have outlined a ten-year plan for an emission-free fleet. ”
