EbeneMagazine – CA – Geologists may have found a long-lost tectonic plate

The existence of a tectonic plate called Resurrection has long been controversial among geophysicists Some believe that it never existed, while others say that it is subordinate to the Earth’s mantle some part in the Pacific margin between 40 and 60 million years ago

A new study from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston has shed light on this point, suggesting that the resurrection plate exists Scientists believe they have found the remains of the missing plate, Resurrection in the north of Canada, crushed, reshaped and buried by subduction processes

For this study, the scientists used a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates looked like in the Pacific Ocean during the early Cenozoic

The Earth’s rigid outer shell, or lithosphere, is divided into tectonic plates, and geologists have always known that there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at the time called Kula and Farallon. in itself, there have been discussions about a potential third plate, Resurrection, which has shaped a unique volcanic belt with Alaska and Washington State.

Scientists believe this study could help geologists predict volcanic hazards and mineral and hydrocarbon deposits

Spencer Fuston, a third year geology doctoral student, said: « We believe we have direct evidence for the existence of the Resurrection Plate We are also trying to resolve a debate and make a case for which side our data supports «

Using 3D mapping technology, scientists applied the slab unfolding technique to mantle tomography images to extract the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes

Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, said, “When they are ‘raised’ to the earth’s surface and reconstructed, the boundaries of this ancient tectonic plate of the Resurrection correspond well to the ancient volcanic belts of Washington State and Alaska, providing a much sought-after link between the ancient Pacific Ocean and the North American geological records «
