The Wolf administration will use the national WEA (Wireless Emergency Alert) system to convey important public messages about the COVID-19 pandemic.

WEA is a national public safety system that enables customers with compatible mobile devices to receive geographically targeted text-like messages alerting them of impending security threats in their area. The wind turbine system is often used to issue time critical and life saving warnings such as amber warnings or severe weather warnings.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Public Security and Homeland Security Bureau enables the state, as the authorized message originator, to use the WEA system as a COVID-19 communication tool.

The first Pennsylvania message will be broadcast nationwide today, with the option to target specific regions of the state for future messages. For example, if a region of the state has an exceptionally high increase in COVID-19 cases, cell phone users in that region may receive an alert with information about how to stay home or where to find an available COVID-19 testing site.

« WEA is another way to reach out to as many Pennsylvanians as possible to provide timely information about COVID-19, » said Governor Tom Wolf. “This tool is another tool in our toolkit to help fight the pandemic and unite against COVID. ”

The message content in English and Spanish is a joint responsibility of the Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. PEMA sends alerts through FEMA’s Integrated Public Warning and Alert System (IPAWS) to participating wireless carriers, who then broadcast the alerts to compatible mobile devices in the area. Mobile phone companies volunteer to participate in WEA.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, the wind turbine system has grown nearly 56 since its inception in 2012. Used 000 times to alert the public of dangerous weather, missing children and other critical situations – all through alerts on compatible cell phones and other mobile devices.

On 20. January 2015 Tom Wolf was 47. Pennsylvania Governor sworn in. Since taking office, Tom has taken a number of steps to make Pennsylvania a better place and fights for the Pennsylvania people in Harrisburg every day.
