EbeneMagazine – GB – Anne Hathaway apologizes for depiction of limb difference in The Witches

css-14iz86j-BoldText {font-weight: bold;} Witches star Anne Hathaway has vowed to « do better » following the reviews the film received for its portrayal of Member Difference

The actress admitted that many people are « suffering » with the way her Grand High Witch character is portrayed

In the new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1983 book, witches are revealed to have three fingers stretched out on each hand and feet without toes

Comedian Alex Brooker and others with hand and arm disabilities accused the film of being callous to people with disabilities

« To me, this sends a message that we should be afraid of people with missing fingers, » Brooker told the BBC earlier this week

Hathaway stated that she « did not make the connection between the limb difference and the GHW [Grand High Witch] when the character appearance was brought to her »

« If I had done it, I assure you it would never have happened, » continued the star, who won an Oscar for her role in Les Misérables

“I especially want to say that I’m sorry for the kids who have limb differences,” she continued. “Now that I know better, I promise I’ll do better

« And I owe a special apology to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own children: I’m sorry I let your family down »

The actress described herself as « someone who really believes in inclusiveness and really, really hates cruelty »

She also shared a video from the Lucky Fin Project, an organization that supports people with membership differences

Hathaway’s post followed an apology Warner Bros. made earlier this week about the portrayal of witches in the film, which differs from that of Dahl’s original

The studio said it was « deeply saddened » to learn that Robert Zemeckis’ film « could upset people with disabilities »

« By adapting the original story, we worked with designers and artists to come up with a new take on the cat-shaped claws that are depicted in the book, » his statement continued

« Viewers never intended to think fantastic, non-human creatures were meant to represent them »

The Witches was originally slated for a theatrical release, but was released on digital platforms last month after the Covid-19 pandemic
