The pilgrims are taking part in the third round of the FA Cup for the first time since the 2016/17 season
Plymouth Argyle are aiming to end a streak of FA Cup second-round defeats for the past three seasons if they host Lincoln City this afternoon.
The Pilgrims have not passed this stage of the competition since 2016-17 when they beat Mansfield Town and Newport County (after overtime in one replay) before taking on Liverpool in round three.
Oddly enough, League Two Argyle drew Premier League clubs Liverpool 0-0 at Anfield before narrowly losing 1-0 on the replay at Home Park.
Since then, there have been second round outings for the Pilgrims to Bradford City in 2017/18 and at home at Oxford United the following season and at Bristol Rovers last season (in a replay).
Argyle has reached the third round of the FA Cup only twice since they were relegated from the championship in 2010.
The other opportunity was in 2013-14 when John Sheridan’s Pilgrims drew 2-2 in Port Vale before being beaten 3-2 in the home park replay.
The pilgrims had 12 attempts at goal, five of which were on target, and three corners.
Lincoln had 20 attempts to score, seven of which were on target, and forced 10 corners.
Despite this superiority in the game statistics, Lincoln was eliminated from the FA Cup when Argyle moves into the third round.

At the other end, Mike Cooper made a great save, throwing Brennan Johnson a shot for the corner. The Argyle goalkeeper was excellent this afternoon.

The change came after Lincoln captain Harry Anderson went just wide after a Jorge Grant free kick.
The free kick was awarded by Jerome Opoku for a foul that earned him a yellow card.

Mike Cooper made some good saves in a matter of seconds. The first came when the ball was diverted onto him by teammate Frank Nouble.
Then, a moment later, Lincoln captain Harry Anderson received a fierce angle shot, which Cooper also handled confidently.
Jorge Grant was born in the 61st. Minute as a substitute for defender Joe Walsh. This is an offensive change from Michael Appleton as the Imps try to find a way back into this tie.
What a fantastic goal from midfielder Ben Reeves, the Argyle in 55th. Minute brought 2-0 lead.

Joe Edwards is back in the action, this time stealing the ball from Max Melbourne and running forward. He has Luke Jephcott on his right but passes the ball to his left to Frank Nouble, who eventually gets a shot that is blocked for a corner by goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Lincoln dominates possession as halftime approaches. They didn’t have too many clear chances, but Argyle was under a lot of pressure.
Lincoln’s right-back Robbie Gotts spends a lot more time attacking than defending. He just had a low angle shot from Mike Cooper at his near post saved.
Argyle are still 1-0 up but will have to work hard to maintain that advantage.
Mike Cooper is on his feet and bends his right knee while p; lay is resumed. Hopefully the Argyle goalkeeper can continue for the rest of the game.

Another half-chance for Lincoln as midfielder Theo Archibald sends a 30-yard drive past the gate. Argyle is mostly on the defensive right now.
Midfielder Conor McGrandles pulled a shot past Mike Cooper’s left post after Joe Walsh whistled for the ball in the Argyle penalty area.
The visitors certainly haven’t lost a heart after falling behind so early. Your two full-backs are making good progress and that is causing the Pilgrims’ problems.
Lincoln left-back Max Melbourne is booked by referee David Rock after a tackle against Conor Grant when the Argyle midfielder tried to break forward.
Lincoln is third in the premier league so they’re a good team. Despite conceding an early goal this afternoon, they play with confidence and often use right-back Robbie Gotts as a source of attack. .
Lincoln center-back TJ Eyoma was not at a ceremony when he launched a clearance on the roof of the Lyndhurst booth. That needs to be done! New ball in play as Argyle leads 1-0.
Whenever the ball is in the opponent’s penalty area, Luke Jephcott comes to life. That’s eight goals this season for him in all competitions.
Argyle took the lead in the sixth minute. George Cooper rolls a corner into Lincoln’s box and Luke Jephcott hits with a fleeting header, leaving Alex Palmer with no chance of saving.
