EbeneNews – CA – Pac-12 football season kicks off in November

Thursday’s Pac-12 set a November 6 start date for a six-game regular football season, after the Big Ten overturned its August decision to postpone to spring due to concerns about the fight against the pandemic

The conference having obtained daily COVID-19 tests for its athletes and given the green light from some state and regional health officials in California and Oregon, university presidents of the Pac-12 voted unanimously to lift a January 1 moratorium on sports competition

The Pac-12 men’s and women’s basketball seasons can begin on November 25, per the NCAA’s recently announced opening date. The championship football game will take place on December 18, putting the conference on the line for college football playoffs and New Year’s Six Bowl selection

A major college football season that six weeks ago looked like it was in jeopardy, is slowly collapsing, reforming, and has a chance to be almost complete by November The Big Ten turned the tide on the last week, with the kick off scheduled for the weekend of October 24

Mountain West presidents met Thursday night to discuss a possible start to the football season in late October and the Mid-American Conference, the first FBS league to postpone, is also reconsidering playing in the fall

The Southeast Conference kicks off this weekend, joining the Big 12, the Atlantic Coast Conference and three more that have been running for weeks

The season is underway but it has been anything but normal There have been 21 games postponed or canceled since August 26 due to teams facing varying levels of COVID-19 issues

This week, four games scheduled for Saturday were canceled, including Notre Dame in Wake Forest due to a virus outbreak among Fighting Irish players

The turning point for the return of fall sports for the Pac-12 came earlier this month when it struck a deal with a diagnostic testing company that will give every school the ability to run tests daily antigens on their athletes

Daily testing is also expected to reduce the number of athletes who find themselves in quarantine after entering what would be considered high-risk contact with someone who has tested positive

When the Pac-12 postponed to August 11, its medical advisers recommended daily testing so athletes could compete safely in most schools in the conference due to the high rates of community spread of the virus

“Since the onset of this crisis, our goal has been to follow the science, data and advice of our public health and infectious disease experts,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement “Our agreement with Quidel to provide daily rapid results testing has been a game-changer by allowing us to move forward with the confidence that we can create a safe environment for our student-athletes while giving them the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”

The Pac-12 said its decision to restart the sport is subject to approval by state and local public health officials

Daily testing helped Pac-12 convince state and local authorities in California and Oregon to lift restrictions that have kept teams from preparing for a football season

There is still work to be done on this front, now in Colorado Due to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases, Boulder County officials on Thursday halted gatherings for college-aged residents for two weeks

No fans will be allowed at Pac-12 sporting events taking place on campus, the conference said
