NRL responded to explosive report on Sam Burgess following a four-month investigation by the Australian newspaper

Sam Burgess was once one of Rugby League’s brightest stars, however, in recent times his life has taken a dramatic downward spiral

NRL and South Sydney were rocked by serious allegations against former Rabbitohs star Sam Burgess on the eve of the series finale

After a four-month investigation into various off-field issues, the Australian newspaper released an exclusive report Thursday evening

This includes allegations that South Sydney officials went to great lengths to prevent public exposure of the English-born star’s loud post-season celebrations at the end of his career

Burgess’ lawyer Mark O’Brien last night published a stern rebuttal to the newspaper allegations against his client

“The allegations are false and constitute an indefensible defamation against my client,” said M O’Brien in the newspaper

“It is obvious that the sources of the false allegations are those currently in dispute with my client on various issues”

Speaking on 2GB this morning, ARLC President Peter V’landys said the NRL will investigate the allegations

“But I stress that all parties including South Sydney club Sam Burgess deserve due process and natural justice

“It would be totally inappropriate for me to comment on this particular case, I don’t have enough facts

“And like any other member of the community, you have to ensure due process and natural justice, and Sam should benefit from it

“But in this case, I think the appropriate action would be to investigate, get all the facts and make a judgment after that” “

“Souths and Sam Burgess have some serious questions to answer today,” said veteran rugby league reporter Danny Weidler “These details demand that Burgess and other officials be removed from their posts during the investigation”

England rugby league star Burgess joined South Sydney in 2010 and quickly became one of the game’s top forwards and was instrumental in the success of the Rabbitoh Premier in 2014, winning the Clive Churchill medal as the best player in the grand final

He left the sport for rugby in 2015 and took part in the disastrous World Cup campaign in England before returning to the rugby league in 2016

Named one of the best players of the decade 2010-2019, Burgess suffered a shoulder injury at the end of his career before taking medical retirement at the end of the 2019 season

This saw increased scrutiny of his privacy, including a messy breakup with his now estranged wife Phoebe The pair split in 2018 but reconciled in early 2019 before finally going their separate ways in October 2019

After the split, Burgess was hit with an apprehended violent order after an alleged argument in Bowral with Phoebe’s father, Mitchell Hooke

His lawyer Bryan Wrench told court in November 2019 that these were ‘false allegations’ but the AVO was upheld with the case due to be heard in November

Just two weeks ago, Burgess, who took on the role of development coach with the Rabbitohs under Souths coach Wayne Bennett, was linked with a potential return to the NRL
