EbeneNews – UA – Souths still on the rise for 2021: Bennett

Wayne Bennett insists South Sydney is getting closer to clearing the final hurdle after becoming the first team in 20 years to lose three consecutive preliminaries finals

The Rabbitohs’ 20-16 loss to Penrith on Saturday night added another year of turmoil for Bunnies fans, following their excellent run from Week 6 to Week 3 of the NRL Final

They were beaten by the Sydney Roosters in the 2018 qualifying grand final, before falling to Canberra last year

In turn, this makes them the first team since Parramatta between 1998 and 2000 to fall at this point for three consecutive years

« And if we can be better next year, we hope it will allow us to break through the obstacle and make it to a grand final

« We had a great end to the season, there is no doubt We struggled at the start and we struggled when we came back from COVID

« But every week we got better and we played our best football last month Lots to look forward to if we can handle it properly »

The most electric team in the competition over the past three months, the Suds have been unable to replicate that attacking mastery on Saturday

Penrith managed their edges well, while Cody Walker was well restrained and Damien Cook only managed one run short of a dummy half

But it’s scary to think how good they could be with the ball in hand when they come back at full strength next year

Latrell Mitchell is set to start the season in good shape after returning from a hamstring injury, while James Roberts will also be able to fall to the side

Jai Arrow will also be added to the pack, while Bayley Sironen and Keaon Kolomatangi will no longer be in their first full season

Their only real loss comes in the form of Ethan Lowe, Bennett confirming that the second injured rower from the home state of Queensland will retire

« We’re not losing anyone who (played Penrith), and if we get the seasoned players back, that’ll be fine too »

Penrith Panthers, National Rugby League, South Sydney Rabbitohs, NRL Grand Final, Ivan Cleary
