EbeneNews – United States – Conservative fraudsters face charges for fake robocalls to voters

Two Conservative agents were charged Thursday with crimes in connection with bogus robocalls designed to dissuade residents of Detroit and other US cities from voting by mail, the Michigan attorney general said

Jacob Wohl, 22, and Jack Burkman, 54, each face four charges in Detroit, including conspiring to intimidate voters in violation of election law and using a computer to commit crimes, said Attorney General Dana Nessel

The appeals falsely warned residents of predominantly black Detroit and urban areas in at least four other states that postal voting in November 3 elections could subject people to arrest, debt collection and forced vaccination, said Nessel

The men, who are accustomed to staging hoaxes and spreading false slander against prominent Democrats and government officials, are not in custody and no arraignment date has been set. fixed

Nessel said his office would work with local law enforcement to secure their appearance if necessary, saying the men could be arrested and extradited or could voluntarily travel to Michigan to face the charges

A judge on Thursday found probable cause to support the charges, which can result in years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines if convicted Computer charges carry up to seven years each, while violations of the electoral law could yield up to five in all

Nessel’s office warned the public about the calls and opened an investigation in late August after thousands of Detroit residents received them

Wohl and Burkman both denied involvement at the time Burkman did not immediately respond to a Thursday voicemail message requesting comment on the charges and Wohl did not immediately respond to an email.

Nessel said the investigation revealed that Burkman and Wohl created and funded robocalls in an attempt to deter voters of color from participating in the November election

« We are all well aware of the frustrations caused by the millions of harmful automated calls that flood our cellphones and landlines every day, but this particular message has grave consequences for our democracy and the principles upon which it has influenced. been built, « said Nessel » Michigan voters are entitled to a full, free and fair election in November, and my office will not hesitate to prosecute those who put it in jeopardy «

Nessel said 85,000 calls were reportedly made across the country She said nearly 12,000 residents of area code 313 received the calls in Detroit and similar calls also covered urban pockets of Pennsylvania, from Ohio, Illinois and New York And she encouraged anyone who received such a call to file a complaint with her office

Wohl and Burkman are used to supporting President Donald Trump and attacking his political opponents

Michigan is a key state in the battlefield Trump narrowly won in 2016, in part because of declining turnout for Hillary Clinton in heavily Democratic Detroit in Michigan, voters can vote by mail for any reason, either by mailing it, dropping it off, or filling it out at the clerk’s office

The appellant identified herself as part of Project 1559 and stated that it was a group founded by Wohl and Burkman The appeals erroneously claimed that voting by mail would result in the introduction of personal information in databases that will be used by police to resolve old warrants, credit card companies to collect debts, and federal officials to track mandatory vaccines

« Don’t be forced to give your private information to the man, » caller said. « Watch out for postal voting »

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, like Nessel, a Democrat, in August called the robocall attempt « an unacceptable, indefensible and blatant attempt to lie to citizens about their right to vote »

She praised Nessel for a swift investigation on Thursday, saying the accusations show the state « will use all tools at our disposal to dispel false rhetoric » and protect voting rights

Investigators executed search warrants in California, where Wohl lives in Los Angeles, as part of the investigation last week, Nessel said

Wohl and Burkman have made their names by orchestrating political dirty tricks and hoaxes, including spreading false allegations of sexual misconduct by Robert Mueller and Pete Buttigieg

Last month, The Washington Post said it was duped into falsely reporting that FBI agents raided Burkman’s home in Arlington, Virginia when it was in fact of an organized event featuring actors

In August, Wohl told The Associated Press that they suspected « leftist pranksters » were behind robocalls because the recipients were given a caller ID that was the phone number Burkman’s cell phone Burkman called the situation a « joke », claiming that no one would use their cell phone number for a robocall and threatening to sue Benson for libel

A Michigan student last year said the duo recruited him to falsely claim he was raped by Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, then released the smear without permission of the student
