More than 3. 000 people demonstrated in front of the police investigation department on Mount Hotzvim in Jerusalem on Saturday evening, demanding the closure of the Judea and Samaria district police and protesting against the whitewashing of the murder of Ahuvia Sandak police.
25 demonstrators were arrested and 15 police officers injured in clashes with the police. According to the police, some demonstrators blocked roads, threw stones at police officers and a bus carrying prisoners, caused damage to infrastructure and handed over a patrol car.
The late Ahuvia Sandak’s fiancée, Shalhevet Goldstein, was attacked by police and sustained a head injury during the demonstration.
Rabbi Dov Lior, the former Chief Rabbi of Hebron and Kiryat Arba, Rosh Yeshiva of Kiryat Arba Hesder Yeshiva and Chairman of the Council of Rabbis of Judea and Samaria opened the rally.
Rabbi David Pendel, head of the Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot, told the demonstrators that « even someone who unintentionally murders is called a murderer » and called on the police to « take responsibility for this murder ». He challenged the process of police investigating their own crimes and called on the government to shut down the Judea and Samaria district police force, which he said was turning into an evil cause. Only then should an independent commission investigate the ramming of a civilian car by a police car that was chasing it, resulting in the death of Avihu Sandak.
« I come from the south and feel connected to the center and the heart, » said Rabbi Pendel. “We send blessings and love to Samaria. You are our messenger. ”
Although the Police Internal Affairs Department clarified over the weekend that the investigation into the police officers involved in tracking the vehicle in which Sandak was killed is ongoing, sources close to the investigation believe that they end up with no criminal charges against the police are police officers in the chasing car who rammed and killed Sandak. This leads to unrest among Sandak’s family and friends, as well as with Otzma Yehudit’s leader, lawyer Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Ben-Gvir issued a statement in which he said, “If the assessment presented tonight is correct and the Internal Police Investigation Department (DIP) closes the case against the cops in the Sandak case, the DIP should be closed sooner the better. ”
Ben-Gvir claimed: “It was only last Friday that the last of the detained youths was released. It is unclear how DIP can close the case without speaking to the boys after they are released – without the police officers involved hearing the conversation. It is unclear how the DIP is ignoring the abundance of evidence showing police officers violated the law and internal police procedures. ”
Avihu Sandak’s father, Avraham, said at the rally: “We have lost our loved ones because of the baseless hatred of the boys and girls on the hills who colonize the land of Israel and love its land. The settlements have always marked the borders of our country, these boys know what we have forgotten. ”
He continued, “The captains of the state sent the police and detectives from the Judea and Samaria stations, with their huge budgets and gruesome policing that sometimes breaks the law, to fight these wonderful youths. The pain and destruction they often cause did not harm our boys’ mood, but it did lead to the death of Ahuvia. From this point on, Ayelet and I are asking the captains of the state to appoint an outside commission of inquiry to investigate the truth. What happened in that unfortunate chase?. A commission that collects the footage from the street cameras and the police cameras, brings the truth to light and brings justice to the world. ”
« We ask for explanations, » Avraham Sandak said to the demonstrators: « Why did we not receive any official notification of the death of our son, why did he lie in the field for hours without being evacuated? » Why were his comrades held in the outpost for so many days? Something bad has been done in Israel and we are calling for repairs. ”
