When a new streaming service starts in Australia there should be something new. Like a puppet Scott Morrison.
Britbox launched in Australia today, making it the latest streaming service to enter a crowded market.
Britbox, a partnership between the British broadcasters BBC and ITV, is featured on Anglophiles with a wide range of British series and programs, including full seasons of favorites such as Vera, Victoria, Lewis, Mr. Bean, The Vicar of Dibley and Midsomer Murders, Blackadder and Prime Suspect.
Exclusive series include the 2020 remake of All Creatures Great and Small, which focuses on the adventures of three land veterinarians, as well as crime thrillers A Confession with Martin Freeman and Imelda Staunton, and Appropriate Adults with Emily Watson and Dominic West.
There will also be the relaunched sketch comedy parody series by Britbox Original, Spitting Image, with the latest episode featuring a puppet version of Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
All of Doctor Who s seasons, both classic and modern, will be available on Britbox. Today’s start date coincided with Doctor Who Day.
A monthly subscription is $ 8. 99 or you can opt for an annual subscription for a reduced fee of $ 89. 99. There is a seven day free trial for samplers. At the start, Britbox is available on smartphones, Apple TV consoles, Fetch, Telstra TV, Chomecast, tablets and smart TVs from Samsung and LG.
Britbox will be launched 12 months into the streaming market following the launch of new brands from Apple, Disney and Foxtel. The mobile-focused service Quibi was launched in April before its spectacular outage.
Australia already supports 15+ paid subscription services, from giants like Netflix and Amazon to niche brands like Shudder (horror titles) and Shelter (architecture and design). .
Britbox Country Manager for Australia Moira Hogan told News. com. Au she hoped Britbox would excel in a crowded market.
« We’re feeling a little different because we obviously have wonderful BBC and ITV shareholders who have really great, rich catalogs to delve into and find those hidden gems or fan favorites, territorial premieres and exclusivity. » to offer.
“We really focused on having full seasons of really legendary shows. Here we will keep our difference.
“We know that Australians in particular like British content, especially British crime and comedy content. There is a strong legacy in Australia. I can safely remember growing up watching TV as a kid watching really great British shows.
« Our research shows that this affinity for content is and that there is still a cultural connection or that people in the UK have families. This is really the kind of audience we are targeting. ”
BBC already operates a linear channel (with on-demand streaming pent-up demand) in Australia called BBC First, which is available on the Foxtel and Fetch pay-TV platforms. Some BBC First series are also available through the Binge streaming service.
Despite the perception that UK TV shows are preferred by an older population that aired on the free to air channels ABC and 7TWO, Hogan is confident that audiences will be comfortable with streaming technology.
« We saw some research published during COVID that during this time streaming has obviously become gangbusters and that older audiences have also been introduced to streaming, » she said.
“We believe we can capitalize on this. A single place to have full series of these great British crime thrillers and comedies is the opportunity to educate that audience through streaming services. ”

While most streaming companies don’t publish their subscriber numbers, the latest streaming data from research firm Roy Morgan in July suggests April 15. 74 million Australians have some form of subscription television.
Roy Morgan found an increase of 5. 9 percent in the last three months, which coincided with the initial period of the COVID pandemic.
Netflix remained the market leader at 13. 2 million Australians had access, while Disney and Amazon Prime Video saw the fastest growing numbers.
Roy Morgan data suggests that Australian households often subscribe to multiple services, with Netflix and Stan being the most popular combination.
