LevelMagazine – GB – Sheffield United 0-1 West Ham: Haller rocket seals the win on Bramall Lane

. .

est Ham won twice in a row in the Premier League and climbed to eighth place when Sebastien Haller struck to pile on more misery at lower club Sheffield United on Sunday.

The Hammers’ record signing just before the hour only scored his second top goal of the season to claim a first win at Bramall Lane in 52 years.

The result not only continued West Ham’s encouraging form, it also ensured Sheffield United still only picked up one point after nine games in 2020/21 as they were at the top level in their second season continue to have big problems.

West Ham remained unchanged after their dramatic late win over Fulham before the international break. David Moyes chose not to risk Mikhail Antonio despite the influential striker returning to training after suffering a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United showed three changes from the 4-1 draw at Chelsea. Oli McBurnie gave a callback to the front and Rhian Brewster on the bench as injured Enda Stevens and John Lundstram were replaced by Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu and re-fit John Fleck, respectively.

The blades made a positive start to the competition. George Baldock forced Lukasz Fabianski to make an early save after the full-back came on behind Arthur Masuaku to connect with John Egan’s long pass.

After a few early horrors, West Ham quickly grew into the game and began to dominate the action. Jarrod Bowen saw a shot blocked before Sheffield United raced forward to counterattack and Fabianski stepped into action again to deny McBurnie and stain.

Aaron Ramsdale later kept a low drive off Vladimir Coufal and West Ham should have continued when Pablo Fornals’ cross was thrown high over the defense from Haller’s left, only for Tomas Soucek to loosen his lines from close range.

The first half ended frantically as McBurnie’s header was parried over the bar by Fabianski and McGoldrick’s flick rebounded off the post before Bowen defeated Ampadu after being released by Fornals.

After the break, only good work by Ampadu prevented Haller from completing a clever ball from Declan Rice, but the newly declared Ivory Coast international was soon celebrating.

After a long clearance from Ramsdale, Coufal launched a quick counterattack from West Ham and Bowen and Fornals bonded well before the latter blocked a shot.

The ball then fell nicely on Haller, who shot a powerful drive home from the edge of the penalty area. Ramsdale got a hand but couldn’t hope to fend off such a violent blow.

Sheffield United lost to Ampadu shortly afterwards to injury and Angelo Ogbonna – who was back with a groin problem – headed a free kick before Rice saw a deflected shot and McGoldrick shot from distance.

Haller missed a great opportunity to double his record and put the game firmly in bed as he tapped Masuaku’s low cross while the authoritative Rice – who just scored his first English midweek goal – and the Busy McBurnie both rattled the gate woodwork in quick succession.

The blades threw everything forward in the final stages, but couldn’t find the target that would only have got to the heart of the second point of a dismal season.
