Gabriel Rosado came incredibly close to a career-best win tonight in Florida and had broken his heart more than normal due to a separate loss in the decision against Daniel Jacobs at the DAZN Main Event.
After a very close, hard-to-achieve and frankly deadly boring bout, ring announcer Jeremiah Gallegos initially appeared to announce separate decision results for Rosado, noting that the winner was « from Philadelphia » before quickly correcting himself and announcing from Brooklyn’s Jacobs as the winner of the split decision:
The score was across the board between 115 and 113, with two going to Jacobs and one to Rosado. BLH also had the 115-113 fight for Jacobs in a chess game match (if you’re nice) that could really have gone either way.
One could argue that neither of the two fighters endorsed his months-long trash talks, but Jacobs (37-3, 30 KO’s) definitely didn’t, as his promise to Rosado (25-13-1, 14 KO ) never came close to the point, while many people could get out of the thought that Rosado’s claim that Jacobs was overrated is actually true.
It was a preliminary bout where neither man got double digits in a round, except that Rosado landed exactly 10 punches in the eighth.
Overall, CompuBox saw Jacobs, 33, who landed 78 of 339 (23%) strokes, including 56 of 169 (33%) of his power strokes. 34-year-old Rosado was credited with 78 of 549 (14%) landed punches and 55 of 242 (23%) of his power shots. Rosado took a lot more shots than Jacobs, 307 to 170, but only landed one, 23 to Jacobs ’22.
« I didn’t think I’d perform the best. I could have done a little better, ”said Jacobs after the fight. « It’s my fault. We had a great camp and obviously I haven’t done all I should have. I’ve been looking for the right hand, but I think I made the right hand happy. I should have stuck to the game plan. He is a game opponent. I didn’t think it was nowhere near that close. ”
At some point during the fight, Jacobs’ trainer asked him in the corner, « Did you bet on this fight? » Jacobs did not get the question at first, so it was repeated. « No, » Jacobs replied, and his coach said he wanted to understand if he wanted to wear Rosado in combat to make it to later rounds. But in his post-fight interview, Jacobs – whose business with DAZN ended with this achievement – tried to show the best face to move on to « bigger and better » fights.
“A fight like this is just a stepping stone. I still have the feeling that there is more to me that has not yet been seen, ”said Jacobs.
« Yo, I felt like I won the fight. I surprised him. I unpacked him, I kicked him out, I countered him, I made him miss big shots, « Rosado said to Chris Mannix. “Even when they said the decision, he was disappointed. He had the look of defeat on his face. This man didn’t do anything to me! He laid more hands on Canelo and Golovkin than on me! “
Rosado continued, “This man fought a fight with GGG, he fought a fight with Canelo, and I made it look easy! I thought I made it look easy! “Said Rosado. « I pushed up and down, I hit him with big right hands, I slipped and moved when it was time, and it was time to exchange that he really didn’t want, he was the one doing the clinching. ”
Good win for Yeleussinov, the 2016 Olympic welterweight champion from Kazakhstan. Sometimes Yeleussinov (10-0, 6 KO’s) looked really impressive in his professional fights, sometimes it seems like the higher levels are too much for him when one day he comes in with the real top fighters.
But he has wiped out Indongo (23-3, 12 KO) this round, scoring defeats in the first and second rounds and taking him down quickly, as Terence Crawford and Regis Prograis did at 140 before the Namibian moved 37 up. Indongo won the IBF 140 pound belt in 2016 by stopping Eduard Troyanovsky in 40 seconds, proving that it wasn’t just a fluke by uniting with the WBA belt in 2017 and Ricky Burns doing 12 laps defeated the road in Scotland. Those were good victories, and rightly so. But he’s been 1-3 since then and the losses were all blowouts. Against very good fighters, even great, mind you, but it is clear that he has done as much as he will do on a global scale.
Indongo got up both times, but he said he was done. It is what it is. He couldn’t handle Yeleussinov’s timing and power and saw no good reason to keep going. It also means that there is no good reason for another promoter to re-engage them in a fight at that level, but it could be.
Solid win for Yeleussinov, who at 29 years old should basically be as ready as he can imagine. There are still levels, but with PBC so tightly controlling not only the top tier but also the majority of the second tier players in the division at 147, it’s really difficult for those players to take good steps at welterweight.
Probably not the performance you got from Ababiy (10-0, 6 KO’s) in his 10th. Want to see professional combat, honestly. He was still fighting very raw, very sloppy and not taking advantage of Maddox to gas pretty hard after two rounds. BLH scored this 58-56 for Ababiy while all three judges had it 59-55 for the middleweight prospect.
Maddox (7-4-1, 5 KO’s) clearly won the first round here, and there was an argument for him in the fifth and sixth rounds too. This wasn’t far from being a truly disappointing result for 22 year old “White Chocolate”, who admitted that he “learned a lot” with this fight which is really never bad for a young fighter from the beginning of theirs Careers, at least as long as they actually study and adapt to what went wrong or almost went wrong. He said after the fight that he would focus more on his boxing in training, which is probably a good idea as we’ve seen that in his last two fights he has had some trouble going to a plan B when plan A the opponent does not collapse quickly.
34-year-old Majidov is no joke, three-time gold medalist in the amateur world championships (2011, 2013 and 2017) and Olympic bronze medalist in 2012. The Azerbaijani fighter wants to accelerate his career and Eddie Hearn wants to do that for him, but it will likely be a little difficult to find opponents.
Here he was way too much for Delgado (8-1, 7 KO’s), a 26-year-old Puerto Rican who turned pro at 198 pounds six years ago and weighed 291 for that fight. And this had a pretty scary ending when Majidov cracked Delgado with a right hand that had the Puerto Rican on its feet.
First of all, you have to give referee Samuel Burgos the honor of stepping in right there because nothing good would happen after that shot. But Delgado was seriously shaken in the corner until Majidov held him completely upright, until more people got there and got a stool for him to sit on. We send our best to Delgado.
Menard did his usual very good job here, and he’s put a lot more effort into Tagoe than Tagoe probably hoped for, in all fairness, depending on your style preference at least. The judges had their thoughts and I thought everything could reasonably be explained – one even had it at 95-95, one had it 96-94 Tagoe, the other had it 98-92 Tagoe. I had 97-93 for Tagoe.
Tagoe (32-1, 15 KO) threw fewer strokes, but landed more and was therefore more accurate. When he was able to keep the fight at some distance, he was able to deal with Menard (36-5, 25 KO’s) in relative comfort. But 32-year-old Menard has been with good fighters over the years, he knows how to behave in the ring, and there have been times when he could penetrate the 33-year-old Ghanaian and make things more difficult.
Tagoe wants a fight with the likes of Ryan Garcia (or Luke Campbell, you might assume) or Devin Haney. He’s a solid competitor, behind or just outside the top 10, but it really doesn’t seem like much of a threat to the better weight talents. Then again, you never really know until you fight. He’s at least a real lightweight and not old and / or comes from an Achilles surgery, so it would be a step for Haney.
